    Tiktok Ban in india

A timeline of TikTok’s rollercoaster journey in India

India has banned TikTok, and millions of Indians are in a tizzy.

Amid heightened border tension, yesterday (June 29), the Narendra Modi government announced a ban on 59 Chinese apps in an attempt to “safeguard” Indian mobile and internet users. The government said it has received several complaints about these apps “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India.”

The list includes social media apps, multiplayer games, beauty apps, web browsers, and other utility apps. But the one name that’s caused the most uproar is TikTok.

The Beijing-based Bytedance-owned video platform has been a rage in the world’s second-largest internet market over the last couple of years. With more than 119 million active users and over 600 million downloads, India is TikTok’s biggest driver.

In 2019, Indians accounted for 48% of the time spent on TikTok by users outside China.

The ban is expected to hit TikTok in a big way, but this is not the first time that the app has landed into hot soup in India. Here’s a timeline of TikTok’s rollercoaster journey in the country:

September 2017: ByteDance launches TikTok globally.

October 2018: A 24-year-old man from Chennai allegedly dies by suicide following harassment by TikTok users for posting videos of himself dressed as a female.

January 2019: S Ramadoss, founder of Tamil Nadu’s Pattali Makkal Katchi political party asks the state government to ban TikTok alleging that it distracts children and leads them to be sexually perverse.

February 2019: Tamil Nadu’s IT minister M Manikandan says the state will seek the centre’s help to seek a ban on TikTok for causing degradation of culture and leading law and order related issues.

A few days later, a college student dies, and two of his friends are severely injured, after their motorcycle rams into a truck while they were shooting a video for TikTok.

April 2019: Advocate and social activist Muthu Kumar files a plea in the Madras high court seeking a ban on TikTok for “pornographic” content. After two days, on April 3, Madras high court demands center ban TikTok and prohibits media to broadcast any content created on the app.

On April 24, the Madras court revokes the ban. Meanwhile, TikTok says that it has removed six million videos for not complying with its community guidelines and has also begun serving users a warning advisory to not post fake news.

Listing out its financial consequences, TikTok says the ban was causing it to incur losses of $500,000 (Rs3.48 crore) per day and jeopardising 250 jobs. Additionally, the ban costs the app an estimated 15 million new users.

May 2019: TikTok reclaims its top spot in India as the most downloaded app on app stores.

July 2019: TikTok’s parent firm ByteDance receives a notice from the Indian government for allegedly misusing the platforms for “anti-national activities.” The apps are warned of a possible ban if they fail to submit appropriate responses to the questions by July 22. To win back the government’s trust, TikTok announces plans to establish local data centres in India.

In the same month, it collaborates with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to educate TikTok’s over 200 million users, including first-time Internet users in India about the ongoing government-driven skill development programmes and vocational training opportunities in the country.

August 2019:  TikTok’s explosion in India since January 2018 expands its reach to 30% of all Indian smartphones, according to data provided by Delhi-based market intelligence firm KalaGato.

October 2019: TikTok becomes the most downloaded app, surpassing Facebook and Instagram. Most of the installs are contributed by India, which accounts for 44% of its total downloads.

January 2020: The company releases its first-ever transparency report. India accounts for 36% of the total user information requests from around the world in the first half of 2019.

February 2020: Golden temple in Amritsar bans shooting TikTok videos at its premises. In Hyderabad, police registers a criminal case against Twitter, WhatsApp, and TikTok on charges of facilitating the spread of hatred and enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, and anti-national content.

May 2020: In the ongoing content creator-led YouTube v/s TikTok battle, YouTuber CarryMinati roasts TikTok star Amir Siddiqui in a video that raked in millions of views before being removed for violating terms. Following this, CarryMinati’s fans start downrating TikTok’s listing on the Play Store, bringing down the app ratings from 4.5 to 1.3.

There are allegations that TikTok videos glorified acid attacks, rape, and misogyny. One controversial clip in this debate is from one of the most popular Indian TikTok creators, Faizal Siddiqui. TikTok suspends Siddiqui’s account.

June 25: A 16year-old TikTok star who gained popularity on the app for her dance videos, dies by suicide.

June 29: TikTok, along with other 58 other apps, is banned by the Indian government. Reacting to the development, the app says it complies with all security requirements under the Indian laws.

    Rain Red Alert in Bihar

Rain Red Alert In Bihar Day After Lightning, Thunderstorms Kill Over 90

Monsoon news: Heavy rain and water-logging at Patna in BiharPatna:

Heavy monsoon rain battered Bihar and water-logging was reported from several parts of Patna, a day after lightning and thunderstorms killed many people in the state. There is red alert for heavy rain in the state today as well. The number of deaths due to lightning and thunderstorms in Bihar climbed to 92, the state Disaster Management Department said today.

Gopalganj in north Bihar reported 13 deaths and several injuries due to lightning during the thunderstorm on Friday, administrative officer Upendra Pal has confirmed, says a report in news agency ANI.

There is heavy rainfall warning in eight districts of Bihar today as well. “Siwan, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj and Katihar will receive very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning,” a met department official said.

Heavy rain in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh is due to a monsoon trough running from Punjab to east Bihar across Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, the IMD said, adding that very heavy rain is likely at some places in eastern UP during next three or four days. Red alert from heavy rain continues in the states of Assam, Sikkim, Himalayan foothills of Bengal and Meghalaya.

Monsoon has covered the entire country today, two weeks earlier than the scheduled date, according to the IMD. The monsoon usually hits Kerala on June 1 and it takes about 45 days to reach Sriganganagar in western Rajasthan, its last outpost in country.

In Odisha, monsoon has been active and the state has received 26 per cent higher rainfall than the normal at this time of the year.

    Bihar assembly elections 2020

Bihar Assembly Election 2020: Nature of alliance is changing, says Chirag Paswan in veiled threat to Nitish Kumar

Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan has asserted that the ‘nature of alliance’ in Bihar is changing, an apparent threat to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as pressure tactics gain momentum in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for later this year. Seat-sharing has been a contentious issue in Bihar on either side of the political divide and Chirag, whose father Ram Vilas Paswan is a Union minister in the Modi cabinet, is in no mood to be left short-changed.

Addressing the party workers via video-conferencing, Chirag asked his party workers to be prepared for any eventuality, a clear indication of the message he was sending to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who faces an uphill task this election.

Chirag’s remarks gave triggered murmurs about a rift in the ruling NDA which comprises Janata Dal (United) of Nitish Kumar, Bharatiya Janata Party and LJP. The JD(U) and BJP have been ruling in the state since 2005, barring the 2013-17 period. The LJP joined the Nitish Kumar government only after his return to the NDA fold after a dramatic turn of events in July 2017.

Chirag is the son of LJP founder and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan. He took over as the national president of the LJP in November 2019. A Lok Sabha MP from Jamui, Chirag also dropped hints that the party could enter the election alone if a situation arises.

In the 243-member Legislative Assembly, the LJP has only two MLAs and has no representation in Nitish’s Cabinet. In 2017, Pashupati Paras brother of Ram Vilas was inducted into Nitish Kumar cabinet but had to resign after he won the Lok Sabha elections from Hajipur in 2019.

Several media reports also suggest that the seat-sharing formula among the NDA partners is believed to be the trigger behind Chirag toeing a different line. The LJP wants 42 seats but the BJP and JD(U) are offering only 30-35 seats, they said.

Chirag has also been upset with CM Nitish Kumar and has been vocal against him for the last few weeks over the handling of migrants and the law and order situation.

Bihar, which is scheduled to go to polls in October-November this year, is likely to see a tough contest between the ruling NDA headed by Nitish Kumar and the grand alliance comprising RJD, Congress, JAM, RLSP and VIP. The opposition alliance is led by Tejashwi Yadav, the son of jailed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav. While Nitish will seek a fourth consecutive victory, it will be a do or die battle for the RJD which is facing a leadership crisis following the conviction of Lalu in multiple fodder scam cases in December 2017.

Reacting to the remarks by Chirag, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari said all is not well in the ruling NDA.

“Chirag Paswan has questioned the functioning of Nitish Kumar on multiple occasions and now he has shown the mirror to the Bihar government. Nitish Kumar is not ready to tolerate them and the LJP is feeling sidelined. Nitish Kumar wants LJP to be ousted and wants to give them less number of seats. Chirag Paswan’s anger is genuine and Chirag will be the reason for the collapse of the NDA,” he said.
